I grew up in the middle of South Dakota. My mother was a musician and pianist, and my father was a carpenter. I took lessons in ballet and tap for 10 years, and my grandmother taught me piano. I worked hard in school and then, like so many others from that part of the country, I left. I live in Washington, DC and became a glass blower more than 15 years ago.
I experiment with form and color as a way of exploring the possibilities of glass. Recent functional work often incorporates murrine, and my sculptural work uses both murrine and pulled, flat cane to create patterns of color.
I find the process and challenges of working with hot glass invigorating. The heat of the studio puts me in a different state of mind. A state of openness, and if I'm lucky, a state of inspiration and creation.
Perception began as an experimentation in color using flat cane and blown glass forms. As I arranged color patterns and blew the clear vessels, it became clear that they presented best as heads with panels of colors as faces.
Our perceptions are colored by a number of factors and experiences, even if what we see or hear would seem to be the same as the person next to us. This dissonance becomes even more poignant as we consider how ideas, information, and misinformation are broadcast and absorbed in the context of a national election.
Perception is on display at Artomatic in Washington, DC from March 8 through April 28. Room 5007, 2100 M Street NW
